Artist Statement
For the subjects of my paintings, I choose images that evoke feelings I want to remember and share. I was inspired by “The Book of Delights” by Ross Gay. For a year he wrote daily essays about the delights he found in everyday experiences. As a plein air painter I recognize little pleasures, moments that make me pause, catch my breath, or make me smile. I began to think of my paintings as a collection of delights in art form. A little delight might be an eye-catching color, the sound of trickling water, or the scent of spring flowers. If I can capture that in a visual image then the moment is preserved. Sometimes little pleasures might go unnoticed, but by paying attention to them, I am reminded of the wonder and beauty of this world. They bring a sense of peace and gratitude, and a feeling of communion with nature. I love plein air painting for the joy of being outdoors and the freshness that results from trying to capture the moment. The changing seasons, the effects of light and atmosphere, color and contrast compel me to paint!
Artist Bio
I live in Columbia, Missouri. I began my art career illustrating children’s books and magazines for various publishers nationwide, which I did for many years. Putting that aside has given me time for a new path. Fine art is now my passion. My work has received recognition in many local and regional exhibits. I enjoy sharing my paintings with others who appreciate the beauty of the Midwest as I do.
