Artist Statement
I was honored to be asked by the Columbia Art League to exhibit here at the bank. Upon reviewing my many years of work with Kelsey Hammond, I noticed that most of my pieces were confined to themes of social protest, landscape, travel, and family-related works. I decided to focus this show on my family-related work. Since my late husband Ben and I had no children, I had to look backward, not forward, to make work about my family. I did memorial prints, a print about the family dogs, and an imaginary portrait, but I never seem to tire of this.
I hope you find some commonality in these prints; most of us come from families related by blood. I'm a second-generation American, so my reach backward only goes so far. Recently, I have discovered a possible relative in the Czech Republic, same uncommon last name, same interests. So the search goes on.
I should add that I began to do prints as an undergrad at the University of Wisconsin because they looked so much better than my drawings. After a year of teaching in Northern Michigan, I returned to school at the University of Iowa and finished a graduate degree in Printmaking. I taught in the Art Department at Mizzou for many years and continue to work well into my retirement. I like the fact that prints are a multiple original medium. It makes trading with other artists possible, and one can reach a larger audience.
