Julia Freund began learning violin at age 3 with the help of her father, a violinist, educator, and orchestral conductor. Her active imagination and interest in a vast array of creative arts always competed for her time and attention, but violin eventually won out and she received a BM in Violin Performance from Vanderbilt in 2001. Upon graduating, she discovered her passion for teaching violin privately to all ages and stages and has maintained a violin studio in Columbia for 21 years. Her motivation for teaching comes from a love of helping people connect mindfully with the body and instrument to overcome challenges through play and gently expanding their comfort zone. Julia believes learning violin should be a journey of self-discovery, self-expression, and trusting in the process. In addition to teaching, Julia has been actively involved with both the Columbia Civic Orchestra and their artistic partnership with Locust Street Elementary, where she has been a pivotal part of many arts integration projects. One of her passions that grew out of her work in arts integration is interpreting visual art through improvisational violin performance. Julia lives in a music and art filled home with her husband, daughter, golden retriever, and rabbit.
