Artist Statement
In her current show, Kelly Durante explores the patterns, ratios, and shapes of sacred geometry, forms which emerge repeatedly in studies of the physical and metaphysical world, and which express our understanding of the universe. Radial and axial symmetries are the foundation of familiar sacred geometry symbols like the Celtic Trinity Knot, Seed of Life, Vesica Piscis (Mandorla), and Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Repeated circles, honeycomb patterns, and the Fibonacci sequence (golden ratio) are incorporated into intersecting arcs, spirals and expanded versions of these structures. Borrowing from mathematics, physics, biology, aesthetics, architecture, and mystical practices, her works appear simultaneously as tributes to the beauty of nature and mandalas to connect with the divine.
Artist Bio
Kelly Durante is both an experimental biologist and a lifelong artist. With degrees in biology, psychology, and anthropology and over three decades working with cells in medical research, scientific themes permeate her work. But for Kelly, art is also an escape from science and a chance to depict fantastical landscapes or supernatural dramas, and give form to ideas, emotions, and dreams.
Kelly’s approach to acrylic pour painting incorporates experimental methods and techniques that she has developed to gain greater control over her final compositions. In her distinctive “precision pours” she harnesses the dynamic fluidity of pour acrylics to produce design and structure, paradoxically bringing order to an inherently unpredictable medium. The balance of order and chaos is at play in every piece.
