Although nearly all of what the researchers wrote about their work was fairly unfathomable to me, I was drawn to Marc Johnson's work. Given the role of viruses in our recent global history, I connected immediately with the study of microbiology in connection with cellular processes, viruses, and immunology. I value the role of science in improving our quality of life and I appreciate the work that was done to develop the vaccines that have saved lives, not only in the past four years, but over generations. I Googled images related to microbiology and cells and was drawn to those, too, as I so often use circles and spheres in my abstract painting. Those shapes in my paintings represent joy, light, connection, and bounce. I love thinking about the fact that this shape also resides within me and has its own (not always helpful) life, too. So my submission contains complex spheres full of layers and colors, within an equally complex field of layered ground.

I was immediately excited by this project because I love the sciences although I understand almost nothing. I love that you proposed this connection between science and art. I do think that they meet, somewhere, and that math and art meet, somewhere, out there beyond my comprehension.
