Mary Ethel Marks was born in Kansas on April 16, 1890. By 1920 she had settled in Los Angeles, and she later died in San Bernardino, California on December 14, 1955. She is known for a unique manner of abstract painting with paper pulp for intrinsic, expressive color work. She should be considered on of the earliest practitioners of mid-century west coast abstraction, though as a woman and a fiber artist she has not yet seen acclaim commensurate with her innovation.
