Artist Statement:

This mixed media portrait celebrates inspirational people in my life through different material, color, and form I use. Paint, pipe cleaners, beads, and collage on a large-scale canvas build up a layered surface that represents those who inspire and support me.

Enhancing this beautiful piece with different textures play an important role in the work. Beads and decorative elements are references of my cultural traditions of celebrating and honoring ones who are important and impactful in your life where beauty carries meaning and identity. Through the vibrant colors and buildup of materials, I want to celebrate strength, individuality, and independence.

This piece is a tribute, honoring the people in my life who shape who I am and recognizing their impact through a portrait that feels both personal and powerful to me.

Artist Bio:

Abrielle Lynn Torufa is a mixed media artist who uses a variety of materials, including painting, drawing and collage. Her work focuses on her culture through material use, meaningful color choices, and representation of inspirational people in her life. Torufa will be a senior at Battle High School in Columbia, Missouri, and plans on pursuing a BFA and MFA in Art as well as a tattooing apprenticeship after graduating.
