It’s a small world after all:

Students will spend a week learning to create small scale sci-fi/fantasy scenery.  We will start by designing our scene, determining what natural and constructed elements we wish to include.  We will use these elements to create a “shopping list”.  Once we know what we are after we will go on a scavenger hunt around town a take some reference photos of areas that have elements of what we wish to include (interesting brickwork or artcitecture, wooded areas with a variety of flora and take note of how the two work together.)  These photos will help us determine what kind of textures we need to invent for our scene.  Afterwards we will construct our scene from bits of discarded cardboard, foam, and natural materials such as sticks and rocks coated in a texturing medium.  Once we have our scene constructed we will learn how light influences color so we can paint them in a way that they look as if all the elements are bathed in the same light.

Columbia Art League (CAL) Camps are for kids and tweens who just love art, whether it’s a favorite kind or trying something new. CAL Camps provide quality art instruction that mixes technique and skill-building with opportunities for creative freedom and self-expression in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. CAL Camps are taught by experienced artist educators and teaching artists and supervised by CAL’s Education Director. Art Camps take full advantage of CAL’s gallery of original works of art by local living artists and other cultural as well as natural resources in downtown Columbia.

Please send CAL campers with a packed lunch and snacks each day and have them dress for the mess!
