Acrylic Paint is a very versatile material. This course will introduce different methods in painting and approaches with acrylic paint. We will be working on skills in composing, methods of apply painting, color mixing, and techniques for creating different styles of painting.

CAL Acrylic Painting Workshop

Welcome! In this class, we will be focusing on techniques used with Acrylic Painting. This workshop will introduce different methods in painting and approaches with acrylic paint. Exercises will focus on skills in composing, methods of apply painting, color mixing and techniques for creating different styles of painting.

Supplies:

Paints:

small tubes- or whatever is on sale

Hues are ok, as they are often cheaper

  • Black (Mars or Ivory)

  • White - Titanium

  • Light Red - Cadmium Red Light

  • Dark Red- Alizarin Crimson 

  • Dark Yellow- Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre

  • Light Yellow- Cadmium Yellow Light

  • Light Blue- Cerulean Blue

  • Dark Blue- Cobalt or Ultramarine Blue

Brushes:

Be sure to get for Acrylic

Packaged brushes are ok 

  • Small Round Brush-- comes to a point

  • Medium Round Brush--- comes to a point

  • Medium Flat or Filbert Brush- Flat- longer bristles, rectangular Filbert- longer bristles and the tip is cut like an arch

  • Large Bright-  Square shape bristles- Size #10-14 is fine.  

Canvases:

(2) 11 x 14

16 x 20

16 x 20 or around those dimensions

Other supplies:

  • small diamond size palette knife

  • rags

  • a split container for dirty water and clean water....jars will work for this too.

  • palette for holding and mixing paint colors.  (you can make your own by taking an old picture. Take out the glass and back it with white foam core the same size as the glass. Around the edges use duct tape to hold the glass to the foam core and to make the edges safe.)

  • glass paint scraper

  • blue painters tape

Agenda:

Week 1:

  • Demo on supplies and set up.

  • Black and White Still Life Painting (Use 16x20 Canvas)

  • Blending and application techniques, composing, and proportions

Week 2:

  • Finish Still life if needed.

  • Discuss color theory (mixing colors)

  • Alla Prima Painting Demo. (will need to bring a photo)

Week 3:

  • Start Colorful Font Painting. (Use 11x14 canvas) (Will need to print out different letters, variety of sizes)

  • Demo techniques with the Hard Edge painting

  • Techniques for using a palette knife and alternative techniques for texture.

  • Review different mediums that allow for different textures.

  • Will need a photograph to reference from.

  • We will work on paper.

Week 4:

  • Finish Hard Edge Painting.

  • Discuss image collage and content.

  • Demo how to make a photo transfers using either Soft Gel or Mod Pod

  • Bring Ideas for last painting.

Week 5:

  • Working with a Collage multiple photographs & Photo Transfers. (Use around 16x20 painting)

Week 6:

  • Finish working on Painting from a Photograph.

  • Critique

  • Fun Non-objective painting and Paint Peels. (Use paper)
